The history of the company began in Oderzo (Treviso) in 1959 when Carlo Stefanel started the production of knitwear under the “Maglificio Opitergino” logo. After moving to Ponte di Piave (Treviso) in 1961, Stefanel changed the company name to “Maglificio Piave”. The factory operated on the market in the traditional way, marketing woolen knitwear throughout Italy through the channel of wholesalers.

Coinciding with the progressive strengthening of the role in the company of Giuseppe, Carlo’s son, in the mid-seventies the “Maglificio Piave” made a first commercial breakthrough with retail sales through its network of agents and the creation of the logo ” Sigma Line” for a young target: a black rectangle in which the writings lived with a line forming the letter “S”.

In 1980 Carlo sensed that the family name could become a brand and so the “Stefanel” was created, which has its strong point in the synthesis of innovative industrial, distribution and financial choices. In fact, a distribution project based on franchising was launched with the opening of the first store in Siena, and two years later in Paris, which immediately proved to be a successful operation. This commercial affiliation used the logo which depicted, in a black square with orange rounded edges, the orange graphic sign resembling a four-leaf clover composed of the Greek letter “sigma” while the white logotype was composed with a “stencil” character. In 1984 the name Stefanel, from a simple product brand, became the official denomination in place of the original “Maglificio Piave”. Between the 1980s and 1990s, the success of the franchising tool and the careful production policies guaranteed the company rapid growth on national and international markets.

The year 1991 was a particularly important year for the company: the new logo was designed by Felix Humm with the logotype composed in Gothic Black in the double horizontal and vertical version. The vertical version is original because it distorts the natural syllabic scansion of the word.

After a serious period of crisis, in 2021 it joined the OVS group. The logo presents slight changes compared to the previous one: black and red with the logotype composed with Helvetica Bold.
