Salvatore Gregorietti was born in Palermo in 1941. He is considered one of the leading exponents of Italian graphic design. In 1959, after studying at the Brera Art School in Milan, he moved to Zurich and attended the Kunstgewerbeschule, a school of arts and crafts. In 1961, he returned to Italy and began working at Massimo Vignelli’s studio in Milan. In 1965, he became a partner in Unimark International, a graphic design and communications studio, with Massimo Vignelli, Bob Noorda, Franco Mirenzi, and Mario Boeri, focusing primarily on graphics, including corporate identity, publishing, packaging, and institutional and commercial communications.

In 1964, he began consulting with the advertising and communications department of the La Rinascente department store; he worked with Pier Giorgio Brovelli (sales director) and Adriana Botti Monti (art director), as well as photographers Aldo Ballo, Serge Libis, Ugo Mulas, and Oliviero Toscani. A strong connection developed between Gregorietti and Adriana Botti: together, they successfully blended the culture of image with design architecture, thus conceiving and producing truly unique communication objects.

His work has received major recognition, winning awards from the Art Directors Club for three consecutive years. He has collaborated with major industries and institutions: Pirelli, Agip, Sanpaolo, Confindustria, the Venice Biennale, the Feltrinelli Foundation, Benetton, and Prenatal; in book publishing: Sonzogno, Bompiani, Sylvestre Bonnard, and Feltrinelli; and among periodicals: “Linus,” “Capital,” “Thema,” “Casa Vogue,” and “Ottagono,” a design and architecture magazine for which he received the Compasso d’Oro in 1979. He taught at the Academy of Fine Arts in Carrara and, in 1988, co-authored the book La forma della scrittura with Emilia Vassale, republished by Sylvestre Bonnard in 2007. He lives and works in Milan.
